The entertaining one-night tennis event, which is being held on World Tennis Day for the fourth straight year has become a staple on the tennis calendar.
"I have been fortunate to play in World Tennis Day events in New York and Hong Kong,” said Wozniacki. “It is a great day to celebrate our sport. This year will be even more special as I return to Madison Square Garden with Serena. It doesn't get much better than that."
The ninth edition of the BNP Paribas Showdown, which consistently attracts the biggest names in tennis, will follow the likes of Pete Sampras, Rafael Nadal, Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick, Ivan Lendl, Juan Martin del Potro, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Mike and Bob Bryan, John and Patrick McEnroe, Grigor Dimitrov, Serena and Venus Williams, Maria Sharapova, Kim Clijsters, Victoria Azarenka, Caroline Wozniacki, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Ana Ivanovic, Monica Seles, Gabriela Sabatini and Jelena Jankovic, all of whom took part in previous Showdowns and provided unforgettable memories for New York tennis fans.
Having just concluded its ninthth year, the BNP Paribas Showdown has earned a recognized place on the international tennis calendar and become a part of the New York sports and social scene. With the advent of World Tennis Day, the reach of the Showdown was primed to grow exponentially and internationally in 2017. With that as background, the March 8 edition was able to perform against its primary goals and objectives of providing memorable moments to the spectators, significant entertainment for the television audience and brand exposure, new business opportunities and customer entertainment for the sponsors.
What was initially a one night event has become what is effectively a seven month platform which this year began on August 24 with a press event introducing the player field at Madison Square Garden, included seven episodes of World of Tennis presented by BNP Paribas and concludes in April with the final re-air of the BNP Paribas Showdown on the MSG+ Network (April 8) and yet to be scheduled re-airs on Tennis Channel and NOW TV (in Hong Kong ending April 30)
Following the introduction of World Tennis Day at the 2012 Davis Cup Final in Prague, StarGames and BNP Paribas announced the expansion of the BNP Paribas Showdown to Hong Kong. The event would mark the return of professional tennis to the city for the first time in three years and attempt to build on the long and successful history of tennis in Hong Kong.
In its first year, the BNP Paribas Showdown - Hong Kong produced the largest single-session crowd for a tennis event in the area in more than fifteen years and, in keeping with the traditions established in New York, assembled a world class field of Grand Slam champions and World #1 players for an event which provided memorable moments for the spectators, significant entertainment for the television audience and brand exposure, new business opportunities and customer entertainment for the 14 Event sponsors.
With the success of the first year of the Hong Kong Showdown, we look forward to growing the event as part of World Tennis Day in future years.
